Chapter Nine
“Can we go see the bunny rabbit, Daddy?”
Joey was dawdling over his cereal, in no hurry to get to day care.
“I kinda think we have to wait for Miss Bess to invite us, sport.”
“Well, when is she going to invite us? She said I could come play again.”
“You never know what a woman will do.”
It was good to remind himself of that, but it was no comfort to his son.
“But she said!” Joey said emphatically.
Scott sighed and gave the answer that no kid ever bought. “We’ll see.”
He’d thought of getting a pet for Joey, but his son’s allergies always gave him pause. He’d have to go through a whole battery of tests to see what animal, if any, wouldn’t trigger a reaction. Then there was the problem of leaving it alone all day. He’d love a dog himself, maybe a beagle or a spaniel, although a nice friendly mutt from the shelter might be a good companion. The trouble with that was an adult dog might come with some bad habits, and a puppy was almost as much work as a baby.
He tabled that thought and urged Joey to finish his breakfast.
“You could call and ask,” Joey said. When his son got an idea into his head, he was like a pit bull with a new toy.
“No, now finish your orange juice.”
Joey pouted but did as he was told. If Scott were a praying man, he would thank God for blessing him with such a great kid.
Nearly a week had passed since he’d taken Lori out for dinner, and he remembered every minute of it. Especially when he’d kissed her hand. She was constantly on his mind. He’d picked up the phone to call her umpteen times, but for some reason he’d always changed his mind. He wanted to urge her to stay in Apple Grove, but how could he ask her to give up a job that meant a lot to her when there was nothing comparable anywhere near here?
“Daddy, I can’t find my Dizzy!”
“We don’t have time to look for your dinosaur now. Anyway, Mrs. Drummond doesn’t want you to bring toys unless you’re willing to share them with the other kids.”
“He’s mine!”
Obviously, Joey had a lot to learn about sharing, but Scott didn’t have time to explain again now. He was taking Joey’s hand to lead him to the truck when his cell phone rang.
“Scott, it’s Lori.”
“Hey! How are you?” He was surprised by the jolt of happiness that coursed through him.
“Fine. Remember when I asked if it would be all right to use Joey as a taste tester for the recipes I’m trying?”
“Sure do.”
“Well, I’m going to make some munchies today. I wondered if the two of you could stop by on your way home from day care. I don’t think a sample will spoil Joey’s dinner, and I’d really appreciate his input.”
“Sure. We’d be glad to,” he quickly agreed.
“Oh, I have some samples of the building materials that the committee approved, too. I hope you’ll like them.
